You’ve probably heard that stress can affect your health, happiness and well-being. It affects you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The fact of the matter is, managing workplace stress is something that you don’t get a lot of support around. But just stop and think about it…if you don’t manage the stress in your life, you’ll eventually have a big price to pay. So let’s look at a few simple relaxation techniques for stress that you can do right away.
First, take a moment to sit up straight. Just the simple act of correcting your posture can do wonders. It allows the oxygen to flow in and out of your lungs more easily. And that’s the perfect next technique: take a deep breath in through your nostrils, and let it out slowly. Now do it again, this time matching your inhalation and exhalation. You don’t have to overdo it. Just breathe gently and naturally. Your body was designed to do this, so you don’t have to worry about whether or not you’re doing it ‘right.’
Great! So you’re using your posture and breath to calm and relax you. That’s easy, isn’t it?
What else can you do? Here’s another technique: the next time you’re feeling anxious, angry or stressed out ask yourself how important this will be ten years from now. Will you even remember it? Is this a life-threatening situation, or are you reacting because you have been stressed and don’t have the reserve energy to handle it more fluidly?
There’s a statement I heard a few years ago, and I’d like to share it with you. It goes like this: you have to be fluid, because flexible is too rigid. Isn’t that great? When I’m ‘going with the flow’ I feel better than when I’m stressing about ‘what is.’ I always try to do the very best I can do in that moment, yet sometimes the pressure I put on myself is unreasonable. And ultimately, unhealthy.
I don’t know about you, but I’m committing to have a respectful, loving relationship with MYSELF. I would never be as critical, irritated or impatient with anyone else as I can be with myself. So that’s another relaxation technique for stress. Honor yourself. Nurture yourself. Forgive yourself. Love yourself. You deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Make sure that you do that for yourself.
